Floor Staining

Custom Hardwood Floor Staining in Georgetown, ON — Transform Your Floors with the Perfect Colour

What Is Floor Staining — and How Is It Different from Finishing?

Many homeowners confuse staining with finishing, but they serve different purposes. Staining changes the colour of your wood. Finishing protects it. In a professional floor refinishing project, staining always comes first — after sanding has stripped the floor back to bare wood — and the finish coat (polyurethane, oil, or hard-wax oil) is applied on top to seal and protect the new colour.

If your floors have never been stained, or if you want to change their current colour, a custom stain is the single most impactful thing you can do to a wood floor. It can take a tired, orange-toned 1990s hardwood floor and give it the look of a modern European interior — without replacing a single board.

At Habitat Flooring in Georgetown, owner Faisal Hussain has been matching, mixing, and applying custom stain colours for over 20 years. Every staining job starts with test patches directly on your floor so you can see exactly how the colour will read in your light before we commit.

Popular Stain Colours We Work With

Choosing a stain colour is personal, but certain shades come up again and again for good reason. Here are the most popular options our Georgetown and Halton Hills clients request:

  • Ebony — A near-black stain that creates dramatic, high-contrast interiors. Works best on species with open grain like red or white oak. Adds a luxury feel to open-plan living areas.
  • Jacobean — A rich, dark brown with warm chocolate undertones. One of the most popular stains in North America; pairs well with white cabinetry and light walls.
  • Provincial — A medium warm brown, lighter than Jacobean. Versatile and forgiving — it suits both traditional and transitional interiors and is a strong choice for homes with varied natural light.
  • Natural / Clear — No pigment at all. Lets the wood’s own tone and grain show through with only a protective finish coat on top. Increasingly popular as hardwood’s natural character comes back into fashion.
  • Scandinavian White / Whitewash — A light, pale, grey-white tone that creates airy, Nordic-inspired interiors. Works beautifully on white oak. Growing rapidly in popularity across the GTA.
  • Grey — Available in cool, warm, and mid-tone grey variations. Pairs well with modern and industrial décor. Requires careful species matching — some woods grey beautifully, others fight it.

How to Choose the Right Stain Colour for Your Home

The right stain depends on four factors: your wood species, your room’s light, your existing furnishings, and the finish type you’re applying over top.

Wood species matters more than most people expect. Maple, for example, is notoriously difficult to stain evenly due to its tight, blotchy grain — darker stains on maple often look patchy without a pre-conditioner or gel stain technique. Red oak and white oak take stain consistently and are the easiest species to work with. Pine and fir require extra prep to avoid blotching.

Light changes everything. A stain that looks warm and rich in the showroom can read cold and flat in a north-facing room. We always recommend testing 2–3 candidate colours in corner patches of your actual floor before committing.

Consider your fixed elements — cabinetry, tile, countertops, and stair railings that aren’t changing. Your floor needs to complement these, not compete with them.

We provide in-home colour consultations and floor test patches at no extra charge so you can make a fully informed decision before the sanding begins.

The Staining Process: Step by Step

A professional floor staining project at Habitat Flooring follows a consistent process:

  1. Furniture removal and floor prep — We move furniture and protect baseboards and transitions.
  2. Sanding — Floors are sanded in multiple passes with progressively finer grits (typically 36 → 60 → 80 → 100 grit) to achieve a smooth, even surface. This is the most critical step; stain reveals every imperfection sanding leaves behind.
  3. Edge sanding and hand scraping corners — Power sanders can’t reach tight perimeters. We hand-sand every edge and corner.
  4. Test patches — We apply 2–3 candidate stain colours in an inconspicuous area and let you approve before proceeding.
  5. Stain application — Applied by hand with rags or pads, working with the grain. Excess is wiped off and the floor is allowed to dry fully (typically 4–8 hours depending on stain type and humidity).
  6. Finish coats — Two to three coats of your chosen finish (polyurethane, oil-based, or hard-wax oil) are applied over the dry stain with light buffing between coats.
  7. Dry and cure time — The floor is walkable in 24 hours but reaches full hardness in 7–14 days. We provide written care instructions for the cure period.

Total project timeline for a typical Georgetown home: 3–5 days from start to move-back.

Can You Stain Over Existing Stain?

Yes — but the floor must be sanded back to bare wood first. You cannot apply a new stain colour over an old one and achieve consistent results. The existing finish and stain must be fully removed through sanding before the new colour goes down. This is standard practice in any professional refinishing project and is always included in our staining service.

How Long Does a Stained Floor Last?

With a quality finish coat applied over the stain, a professionally stained hardwood floor should look excellent for 10–15 years under normal residential use. The finish protects the stain from UV fading, foot traffic wear, and moisture. When the finish eventually shows wear, the floor can be lightly abraded (“screen and recoat”) and new finish applied — the stain colour underneath is preserved. A full re-sand and re-stain is only needed when the wood itself has been scratched or gouged down past the stain layer.

Q: How much does hardwood floor staining cost in Georgetown, ON?

A: Floor staining in Georgetown typically costs between $3.50 and $5.50 per square foot for the complete refinishing process (sanding + staining + finish), depending on floor condition, wood species, and stain type selected. A 500 sq ft main floor usually runs $1,750–$2,750 CAD. Exotic or difficult-to-sand species, heavily damaged floors, or custom-mixed stain colors may carry a premium. Q: Can you stain hardwood floors a different colour without replacing them?

A: Yes. As long as the hardwood is solid or thick engineered wood (at least 4mm wear layer), the floor can be sanded back to bare wood and restained in any colour you choose. The only limitation is the number of times the floor has been previously sanded — most solid hardwood floors can be sanded 3–5 times over their lifetime before the boards become too thin.

Q: What stain colours are popular for hardwood floors in 2024 and 2025?

A: The most requested stain colours currently are Scandinavian white (a pale, greyed-white tone), warm naturals (no pigment, just the wood’s own colour), and cool grey shades. Dark stains like ebony and Jacobean remain popular in traditional and transitional homes. The move away from orange-toned floors toward cooler, lighter, or dramatically darker tones has been the dominant trend across the GTA for the past several years.

Q: How long after staining can I walk on my floors?

A: Most stained floors with a water-based polyurethane finish are safe for light foot traffic (socks only, no furniture) after 24 hours. Oil-based finishes may require 48 hours before light traffic. Full furniture move-in is recommended after 72 hours. Full hardness cure takes 7–14 days — during this period, avoid rugs, furniture sliders, and wet mopping.

Q: Does staining work on engineered hardwood?

A: It depends on the thickness of the wear layer. Engineered hardwood with a wear layer of 3mm or less generally cannot be safely sanded and stained. Floors with a 4–6mm wear layer can usually be sanded and stained once. Thicker engineered boards (6mm+) can be treated more like solid hardwood. Habitat Flooring will measure your wear layer before any work begins to confirm suitability.
